COVID-19. Sino-Russian experience in the fight against the pandemic

On June 17, 2021, the international medical forum of the Association of Sino-Russian Association Medical Universities (ASRMU) was held. As part of the forum, a “Scientific Conference on the fight against COVID-19 Pandemic” was held.

The event has become an important event under the aegis of ASRMU, which will contribute to the promotion of scientific approaches and discoveries in the fight against a new coronavirus infection.
The leading experts from medical universities in China and Sechenov University attended the online conference.

In his welcoming speech to the conference participants, Zhang Fengmin, Vice-Rector of Harbin Medical University, Head of the Center for Endemic Disease Control at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, thanked the Association of Medical Universities for its support and expressed hope in expanding and strengthening relations between universities in China and Russia. “It will be useful, especially in a pandemic, to work together to find ways to jointly treat and prevent coronavirus infection and eliminate the negative consequences of a pandemic,” said Zhang Fengmin.

On behalf of the Russian side, the First Vice-Rector of the Sechenov University, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Dr. Andrei Svistunov delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the rector of Sechenov University, co-chairman of the Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities Petr Glybochko. He noted that joint Sino-Russian scientific and practical events are not only the platforms for the exchange of achievements in various fields of science, but they also bring together teams of like-minded people from both countries in research projects. Andrey Svistunov emphasized that in today's realities it is extremely important to create opportunities for networking between young physicians, who are the future of world healthcare.

“The Russian Federation and China continue to actively cooperate in the field of epidemic prevention and control, diagnosis and treatment using Western and traditional Chinese medicine, research and development of vaccines against a new coronavirus infection, thus becoming an example of global anti-epidemic cooperation. I am convinced that the results of today's forum will help us develop joint approaches to solving the global problem of the epidemic,” Andrey Svistunov said.

The main topics of the conference reports were scientific discoveries and practical methods to fight against the new coronavirus infection. The moderator of the Russian side, Vice-Rector for Research at Sechenov University, Denis Butnaru, noted the relevance of the topics of the reports presented at the conference, and expressed confidence that they would serve the active development of scientific methods to combat infections and covid infection in particular.

Extremely relevant data in the context of thrombosis and thrombotic storm in patients with COVID-19 was presented in the report “COVID-19. Thromboinflammation and thrombotic storm” by Professor, Dr., Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sechenov University, Vice-President of the Russian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Alexander Makatsaria. In his speech, he named the main reasons that can lead to a decrease in ADAMTS13 activity, and also outlined the mechanisms of hemostasis disorders as the main factor in hospitalization with COVID-19.

The practice-oriented report "Respiratory support in hospitalized patients with COVID-19" by Professor, Dr., Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Head of the Department of Pulmonology, Director of the Clinic of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine of Sechenov University Sergey Avdeev aroused great interest in forum members.
A deep understanding of the structure of coronavirus infection was presented in the report "The genetic structure of the genera of coronaviruses as a way to assess the potential for the emergence of new viruses" by Professor, Dr., Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-borne Diseases named after. E.I. Marcinov Sechenov University Alexander Lukashev.

The participants of the conference listened with great attention to the report of the professor of the Department of Pediatrics and Children's Infectious Diseases of the Sechenov University, Ph.D. Daniil Moonblit “Post-COVID state in adults and children”.

In general, the scientific conference on the fight against COVID-19 pandemic has become an effective platform for close cooperation between medical universities in Russia and China on topical issues of modern healthcare.

The Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities (ASRMU) was established in 2014 at the initiative of the I/M/ Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) and Harbin Medical University. Since 2015, meetings of ASRMU Permanent Council have been held jointly with Russian-Chinese scientific symposiums and conferences in various fields of medicine and pharmacy.
